AfterBirth Baby Wipes 99% water-based wipes with a pulled-out wipe, a glass of water and aloe vera

Water Wipes vs Wet Wipes for Babies: Which Is Better for Newborns?

Quick answer: All baby wipes are "wet wipes", but water wipes (water-based wipes) are made almost entirely of purified water, often 98–99%+, with very few added ingredients. Regular wet wipes contain more cleansers, emollients and often fragrance. For newborns, sensitive skin and diaper changes, water-based wipes are usually the better choice. Regular wet wipes are fine for older babies and heavier mess, and adult or antibacterial wet wipes should not be used on babies.

Shop for baby wipes in India and you'll see "water wipes", "wet wipes", "99% water" and "baby wet wipes" used almost interchangeably. They are not all the same. This guide explains the difference between water wipes and wet wipes, which is best for your baby, and how to read a wipes label.

What are wet wipes?

"Wet wipes" simply means any pre-moistened cloth. That includes baby wipes, but also facial wipes, hand-sanitising wipes, cleaning wipes and makeup wipes. Only wipes made for babies should be used on a baby's skin. Adult, antibacterial and sanitising wet wipes can contain alcohol or disinfectants that are too harsh for babies.

What are water wipes?

"Water wipes" or water-based baby wipes are baby wipes whose liquid is almost all purified water, often labelled "99% water". The small remaining part is usually a gentle preservative to keep the pack safe from germs, plus sometimes a soothing extract like aloe vera. Fewer ingredients means less chance of irritation.

Water wipes vs wet wipes: the differences

Main liquid 98–99%+ purified water Water plus cleansers and emollients Water, alcohol or disinfectants
Ingredient list Short Longer Varies, often harsh
Fragrance None or very mild Often scented Often scented

Which is better for babies?

  • Newborns (0–3 months): water-based wipes, or cotton and water at home. Newborn skin is thinner and more easily irritated.
  • Sensitive or rash-prone skin: water-based and unscented. See wipes for diaper rash and sensitive skin.
  • Face, hands and mouth: water-based wipes, since they may be swallowed in tiny amounts or touch the eyes.
  • 6 months+ and solid-food mess: either type works; a thicker sheet matters more than the liquid.

Are water wipes really just water?

No. A wipe that was pure water would grow bacteria and mould inside the pack. Every water-based wipe has a small amount of preservative. Good ones use gentle options and leave out parabens and MIT. "99% water" means the remaining 1% is what you should check on the ingredient list.

How to read a baby wipes label

  1. Water first: purified water should be the first ingredient, and ideally stated as 98–99%.
  2. No alcohol: look for "alcohol-free", and avoid ethanol or isopropyl alcohol.
  3. Preservatives: prefer paraben-free and MIT-free.
  4. Fragrance: unscented for newborns and sensitive skin; very mild if scented.
  5. pH balanced and dermatologically tested.
  6. BIS certification: in India, baby wipes can be certified to IS 17509:2021.
  7. Pack: a resealable lid or flip-top keeps wipes moist and clean.
